What is Viscosupplementation?
Viscosupplementation refers to the injection of a hyaluronic acid preparation into the joint. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance present in the joint fluid that assists in lubrication. It allows the smooth movement of the cartilage-covered articulating surfaces of the joint. Hyaluronic acid injections are frequently referred to as “gel shots.” There are numerous different manufacturers of these medications.
Indications of Viscosupplementation
Hyaluronic acid injections are indicated in the management of knee arthritis that has not responded to non-surgical treatment options such as anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, bracing and corticosteroid injections.
Viscosupplementation Procedure
The medication is injected directly into the joint similar to how a corticosteroid injection is peformed. There are no restrictions on activity after the injection.
How does Viscosupplementation Work?
These injections are felt to be lubricating injections for the joint. They may also carry some anti-inflammatory properties with them.
Risks and Complications of Viscosupplementation
You may experience mild pain, swelling, warmth, and redness at the injection site. Joint stiffness and pain may also occur in some cases.
